When Madison Bumgarner and Zack Greinke face off Thursday night in Phoenix, the Diamondbacks will wear a special set of throwback uniforms.

There’s something a little bit different in the air tonight, a certain anticipation that’s relatively close to a playoff game. The reasoning, of course, has to do with upcoming showdown between two of baseball’s best pitchers — Madison Bumgarner and Zack Greinke — and how much it would mean to emerge victorious.

As we speak, the D-Backs (60-49) are deadlocked with the Dodgers (60-49) for first place in the NL West. Depending on how the Dodgers-Brewers game goes, a win over Bumgarner would keep our boys tied for the division’s top spot or all alone at №1. More importantly, a win over a genuine ace would quiet any skeptics and give the roster an extra dose of swag down the stretch.

Before we get ahead of ourselves, though, the D-Backs still need to come out strong. And what’s the best way to make sure that happens? It’s not rest or extra swings off the tee. Instead, it’s by rocking some killer red throwbacks circa 2011.

Arizona often wears throwbacks on Thursday games but these red alternates are off the charts. Furthermore, the retro ensemble is being worn to honor Arizona’s 2011 team that won the NL West title. A favorite with fans, the 2011 crew featured some great players and personalities. Among numerous others, the roster boasts a young rookie that’s currently a star, two different 39-year olds, and a guy who was out of baseball for almost five years.

All jerseys will have a “KT” patch on the chest to honor former GM Kevin Towers. Sadly, Towers passed away on January 30th, 2018 at age 56. Before his front office career, Towers played eight seasons in the San Diego Padres organization.

First pitch is set for 9:40 P.M ET with the D-Backs currently big favorites over San Francisco. Thursday’s meeting is Game 1 of their four-game series.
