On Tuesday, it was announced that the Arizona Cardinals signed undrafted free agent Austin Wolf.

While a lot of people were hoping the Rashad Ross experiment worked out, he wound up getting released by the Arizona Cardinals on Tuesday. Taking his place is another young receiver, undrafted free agent Austin Wolf from the University of Akron.

Ross, an Arizona State alum, was the Washington Redskins’ primary kick returner in 2015 but is running out of chances in the NFL.

As for Austin Wolf, he’s an absolute long shot to make the 53-man roster. However, he has a lot of upside and can be a solid guy to have on the practice squad.

In four years with the Zips under Terry Bowden, Wolf caught 82 balls for 1,322 yards and 13 touchdowns. During his senior season, Wolf led the team in catches in the Boca Raton Bowl.

Despite a resume that’s mediocre, the 6-foot-3 receiver put on a solid showing at Akron’s Pro Day. Per the Akron Beacon Journal, Wolf ran a “sub 4.4 40-yard dash” and put on “15 pounds of muscle” before the event. His other 40-yard dash came in “at about 4.5”, per the article.

On Draft Scout’s website, Wolf’s official 40-yard dash time is 4.52 and his vertical jump is 37″.

Compared to receivers who tested at the 2018 NFL Combine, that’s pretty good. Of the 38 receivers who participated in the vertical jump at the combine, Wolf would have been tied for No. 8. In the 40-yard dash, 19 receivers had times below Wolf’s official time. It should also be noted that SMU’s Courtland Sutton, the third wide receiver taken in the 2018 NFL Draft, was below Wolf in both categories (4.54; 35.5″).

Christian Kirk, Arizona’s second-round draft pick, ran a 4.47 in the 40 and had a 35.5″ vertical jump.

Per Arizona Sports 98.7 FM, Wolf will wear No. 15 for the Arizona Cardinals.
