The Arizona Diamondbacks have been getting runs early and often in recent games.

In all sports, as well as other areas of competition, it’s very, very important to draw first blood. Recently, the Arizona Diamondbacks have been doing that a lot. Over the last nine games, they’ve scored runs in the first inning eight different times.

And how’d they do during this stretch? A rock-solid 7-2.

Possibly the most impressive thing about their run of first-inning strikes is that, more often than not, they’re scoring multiple runs. Of the eight times they’ve scored in the first inning, seven have been two-or-more runs. On August 17th, they scored five first-inning runs and that’s all they needed for a 5-1 win over the San Diego Padres.

Overall, the D-Backs have averaged more than three runs in the first inning over their last nine games — 3.2 per game, to be exact.

Carrying the crew during this wild stretch is Arizona’s All-Star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. He’s had at least one hit during every game, this coming after hits in all five previous games. In total, Goldie is currently on a 14-game hitting streak. In the nine games, specifically, he’s gone 19-for-35 with five home runs, resulting in a .543 batting average and 1.667 OPS. Additionally, the six-time All-Star homered on three different occasions in the first inning during their last nine games.

David Peralta has also been on fire during their run, hitting .370 in the nine-game stretch.

Arizona has won three games in a row and now holds the first-place spot in the NL West by 1.5 games. Next up for the D-Backs will be the Seattle Mariners. They’ll start a three-game home series against them on Friday, August 24th at Chase Field in Phoenix, AZ.
