QB Charles Kanoff Among Arizona Cardinals Practice Squad Additions
As of September 2nd, the Arizona Cardinals have signed seven players to their practice squad, including quarterback Charles Kanoff.
In today’s NFL, a lot of teams carry just two quarterbacks on their 53-man roster with one stashed on their practice squad. The Arizona Cardinals, however, have gone a different route this year despite having one of their deeper quarterback groups in recent years. On September 2nd, the team officially announced that former Princeton QB Charles Kanoff would be one of seven players to join the franchise’s practice squad.

With the addition of the Ivy League rookie, the Cardinals will now have four quarterbacks drawing a paycheck from the team this season — joining veteran starter Sam Bradford, rookie backup Josh Rosen, and journeyman third-stringer Mike Glennon. Of course, Kanoff’s check will be much smaller than the rest of the group, as practice squad players earn a shade over $100,000 per year.
It should be noted that practice squad players did get a bump this year, jumping from a $7,200 weekly minimum in 2017 to a $7,600 weekly minimum in 2018, per the Sporting News.
Kanoff looked decent in the preseason at times, particularly in Arizona’s first game against the Los Angeles Chargers. In four series, the rookie took control of the offense en route to a 24-17 comeback victory. His biggest play came on a 48-yard strike to fellow practice squad signee Jalen Tolliver, followed by a touchdown pass to recently-cut tight end Bryce Williams.
The players joining Kanoff and Tolliver on Arizona’s practice squad go as follows: Elijhaa Penny (RB), Will House (OL), Alec James (DE), Pasoni Tasini (DT), and Andrew Vollert (TE).
Besides Charles Kanoff, the signing of Penny is also noteworthy because he played a lot with the big club in 2017. Now a fullback under Steve Wilks, the former Idaho Vandals star ran the ball 31 times last year for 124 yards and two touchdowns. He also added four catches in the passing game. As a fullback, though, Penny isn’t too far away from the NFL roster. Derrick Coleman, the starter, is the only fullback on the 53-man roster.
Arizona kicks off their season at home against the Washington Redskins at 4:25 P.M ET.
