Arizona State Football: USC Prepping Third-String Freshman QB vs. ASU
USC is preparing Jack Sears for their upcoming game against the Arizona State football program.
At the moment, the Arizona State football program is 3-4. And while their record looks iffy, all of Arizona State’s losses have been by one score. I don’t think it’s crazy to say that, despite their sub-.500 record, the Sun Devils are still a solid Pac-12 program.
This week, fresh off their tough loss at home against Stanford, Arizona State will travel to Los Angeles to play USC at the Coliseum. Longtime starter Manny Wilkins has never beaten USC but this time around, he’s not facing Sam Darnold. For that matter, he won’t be facing their 2018 starter either, JT Daniels, or his backup. Instead, they’ll likely be facing USC’s third-string quarterback Jack Sears, according to head coach Clay Helton in an ESPN report.

Daniels and his backup, Matt Fink, were both hurt last week in a loss to Utah. Sears, who didn’t play against the Utes, is a redshirt freshman and has never played a snap of college football.
"With USC starting quarterback JT Daniels in concussion protocol and backup Matt Fink out with three broken ribs, third-stringer Jack Sears will prepare as the starter for this week’s game against Arizona State, coach Clay Helton announced Sunday evening."
Clay Helton, USC’s head coach since 2015, added that he was a “big fan of Jack” and that, if given the task, “he’ll do a great job.”
To his credit, Jack Sears had a decorated high school career at San Clemente High School in California. Additionally, he has very good size (6-foot-3) and had the luxury of learning from Darnold during his redshirt season.
With that said, this is the best-case scenario for Herm Edwards and the Arizona State football program. A win against USC on the road will do a lot for them internally and in the national conversation.
ABC will broadcast Arizona State-USC nationally at 3:30 P.M ET this coming Saturday (October 27th).
