Arizona Diamondbacks Trade Rumors: Can Dave Stewart Use Home Field Advantage To Improve Team?

The General Manger meetings are under way right in the Arizona Diamondbacks back yard. While most of the other GM’s needed to pack up their staffs and head west, Dave Stewart has the advantage of conducting business on his home field.

Much has been made about the Diamondback budget conscious mindset this offseason.  But General Manager Dave Stewart has made it clear that he intends to improve the team by signing a free agent or through trade.

"“Are we going to throw the same bunch of guys out there again?” Stewart said. “Probably not. I think there are probably going to be some changes, but I think at this moment the one area that we’ve focused on is our pitching.”"

The Diamondbacks focus on pitching includes going after a front line starter but not one that will break the bank.  Early speculation says that the Arizona Diamondbacks will not pursue a high-priced free agent pitcher like Max Scherzer or James Sheilds.  Instead they may look for an arm that could develop into an ace down the road.  An arm like Jeremy Hellickson.

Dave Stewart wasted no time in asking about Hellickson acknowledging that he did so on the first day of the General Managers meetings.  There is no deal pending but the move sends a clear signal that the Arizona Diamondbacks plan to be players in the off-season.

Jeremy Hellickson will have to be acquired by trade and the Arizona Diamondbacks have some big pieces to offer.  Miguel Montero could be involved in a deal for Hellickson but the Rays will most likely be focused on one of the Diamondacks talented shortstop prospects.

The Diamondbacks are also in the market for an outfielder and it just so happens that one of the free agent markets best options is in Arizona.  Nelson Cruz made the trek to the desert to talk to the Orioles but it is speculated he will make the rounds while he is on town.  Hopefully that includes a power lunch with Dave Stewart.  Just another way the Arizona Diamondbacks GM could use his home field advantage.
