Arizona Wildcats and Michigan State Spartans Headline 2015 Wooden Legacy
By Gabe Encinas
When it comes to scheduling, Sean Miller is one of the best in the country. Just this week, Arizona’s future non-conference schedule got a little more exciting. The Arizona Wildcats have been selected to take part in the 2015 Wooden Legacy, joining UC Irvine, Boise State, Boston College, Evansville, Providence, Santa Clara and Michigan State. The opening round of the tournament will be played at California State Fullerton, with the final two games being played at the Honda Center in Anaheim.

Both Michigan State and the Arizona Wildcats reached the Elite 8, meanwhile Providence gave North Carolina a scare in the opening round of the tournament this last year. This year, UC Irvine is projected to win the Big West and Boise State was selected to finish 2nd in the Mountain West. UC Irvine played Arizona pretty tough this past weekend. Most viewers of college basketball would find this worrisome, but UC Irvine returned four starters from a 23-win team last season, featuring 7-6 center Mamadou Ndiaye.
The rest of the field seem to just be fillers, making for exciting first round games, allowing Arizona and Michigan State to meet up in the finals. But weird things can happen, this is college basketball after all.
Going forward, Arizona has some of the top programs in the country on their schedule. Just last week, the Arizona Wildcats were invited to join the Armed Forces Classic vs Michigan State. With two potential match-ups against the Spartans, this could spark an out of conference rivalry for two of the top programs in the country. Joining UA and MSU in the Armed Forces Classic will be Kansas and Indiana.
The Arizona Wildcats will host Gonzaga this year, who many believe to be a #1 seed in the tournament come March. This series was designated to be a home-and-home matchup, however no return date to Gonzaga has been scheduled. Going forward to 2017 and 2018, the Arizona Wildcats will take the UConn Huskies in a home-and-home series as well. Sean Miller still has plenty of time to pull off some top match-ups going forward, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens going forward.
