2006 Kansas City Chiefs

During the 2005 season, the Kansas City Chiefs went 10-6 under head coach Dick Vermeil and quarterback Trent Green. At the conclusion of the season, however, Vermeil retired. This led to the hiring of Herm Edwards for the 2006 campaign.

Entering the season, Edwards was lucky enough to have Trent Green coming back to lead the team.

However, in the first week of the season, Green suffered a severe concussion that sidelined him for several months. His backup? Little-known Damon Huard.

Despite having just a handful of starts under his belt, Edwards was able to tailor things for Huard and create a successful path. In the eight games he started while waiting for Green to recover, Huard went 5-3 while throwing 11 touchdowns and just one interception.

By seasons end, the Chiefs earned a wild card berth with a 9-7 record. Awaiting them, though, was the high-powered offense of the Indianapolis Colts. In what turned out to be Edwards’ final postseason appearance, Peyton Manning led the Colts to a 23-8 victory over Edwards’ team.
