No. 5 Pick: Cody Fincher

Q. Why did you choose Marshawn Lynch with the fifth overall pick?

A. The reason I drafted Lynch with the 5th overall pick is because I believe he is the best running back in the NFL and I was actually surprised he was ranked below the number 3 spot overall. With Seattle’s addition of Jimmy Graham, the entire focus of opposing defenses can’t be only focused on Lynch anymore.

With the defenses having to focus elsewhere, I believe Lynch will get even better running lanes and more opportunities to get big yardage. And of course they touchdowns will be there. Hopefully a lot of goal line touches, unlike in the Super Bowl.

Q. Do you think the Russell Wilson/Lynch combo on your team will work better than having a QB/RB tandem on different NFL teams?

A. Having Wilson and Lynch on the same team shouldn’t affect my team in a negative way. Wilson brings a lot to the table as a quarterback. He’s mobile and capable of getting both rushing yards and passing yards. Again, the addition of Jimmy Graham should help Wilson too, as he now has a go-to receiver.

Also, Wilson hardly ever turns the ball over. Last year, Wilson only threw seven interceptions while throwing 20 touchdown passes. To be honest, my first two choices at quarterback were Andrew Luck and either Peyton Manning or Aaron Rodgers. But with all three of them gone by my pick in the second round, I thought Wilson was the best choice in terms of fantasy value at that spot.

Q. What grade would you give your draft and why?

A. After it’s all said and done, I would have to give my draft a B+. The reason for that grade is that I didn’t end up with a top tier receiver, such as a Calvin Johnson or a Dez Bryant, that I would have liked to have. I noticed that many drafters took a receiver in either the late first round or the second round.

I chose to take a quarterback in the second round and not a receiver, when in reality I probably could have waited to get a quarterback in the next round. However, I did end up with one of the best running backs in the league in Lynch and the best tight end in the league in Rob Gronkowski. Tight end is a very thin position in the NFL; there are not nearly as many elite tight ends as there are wide receivers. So having the best tight end on my team gives me an immediate advantage every week.
